It’s only 6:40 pm and I’m plumb exhausted. Can’t-keep-my-eyes-open kind of tired. Guess I’ll be nodding off soon. A good night’s sleep, once a lofty goal, will soon be realized in a very short while.

On another note, here’s a scenario: someone looks like they’re really, really sad. You ask them if they’re alright, and they say yes. You hear them break into tears later while they’re on the phone. What to do?

  1. I would do three things, not in this order or all of them, but perhaps a combo. 1. Be open to listen if you sense he/she wants to share. 2. Non-verbal encouragement, e.g., a hug. 3. “I heard you crying last night on the phone. How are you feeling?”Asking “how do you feel” rather than “how are you doing” sometimes makes a difference in someone opening up or not.If she doesn’t want to share, then I think it’s okay to let her process some things before she shares.
